Gavin Williams threw seven shutout innings to lift the host Cleveland Guardians to a 1-0 win over the Athletics Sunday.
Williams (14-8) gave up only three hits, one walk and struck out nine in 89 pitches. He threw 63 strikes and only allowed three fly outs.
Steven Kwan had three hits as the Guardians (81-75) swept the series and remain atop the American League Central.
A’s starter Jack Perkins (3-12) gave up five hits and one run in six innings. The right-hander didn’t walk anyone and struck out four in 80 pitches.
The A’s (61-95) threatened in the eighth after Williams left the game.
Hunter Gaddis gave up a one-out single to pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil and a double to Jonah Heim. Kwan dove and was able to get his glove on the ball, but it popped out
Gaddis then struck out pinch-hitter Carlos Cortes and closer Cade Smith came in to strike out Henry Bolte.
Smith gave up one hit during a scoreless ninth for his 39th save.
The Guardians scored first when they picked up a disputed run in the fourth.
Jose Ramirez led off with a double to right and went to third on a fly out by Chase DeLauter.
Jo Adell followed with a roller right in front of the plate.
Perkins’ throw to first hit Adell in the left shoulder, allowing Ramirez to score.
A’s Manager Mark Kotsay argued loud and hard that Adell was too far to the inside of the line, but the umpires disagreed and Kotsay was thrown out of the game.
Cleveland had another chance to score in the sixth when Kwan singled with one out.
DeLauter singled him to second with two outs, but the runners were stranded when Adell popped out to second.
The A’s best chance to score early came in the second when Zack Gelof and Donovan Walton hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.
Williams bore down, however, getting a pair of ground outs and a strikeout to keep the A’s off the board.
Gelof had two of the Athletics’ six hits.
